4 items. Countless ensemble ideas.

Colours that never seem to go out of style—white, black, neutrals.

Stick to the classics and you’ll have a timeless wardrobe that will last you… your waistline. Lol.

I’ve learnt that to make each dollar spend stretch a little further—> with purchases that involve the waistline (bottoms/tops that are affected by how much we eat/exercise lol, you get the idea), opt for more “scalable” pieces.

Explore loungewear chic, trendy oversized “lazy day” pieces—what I like to call, the “lockdown” slash stay-safe-stay-home “Instagram fashion”—pieces that would be able to survive potential waist-line fluctuations, and still be able to fit without the fuss.

Think—> items of clothing that can carry you through the days of bloating and cheat meals. Lol.

I’m not sure if you’re more of a comfort-over-style person or the other way around. Or perhaps you’re more of a practical dresser—functionality first—kind of human being. There used to be a great “fashion disconnect” between the two, in the past, but these days (and more apparently on social media), it appears that the typical “rules” for style don’t really apply anymore. Anything goes, so long as you wear—>CONFIDENCE. Yep.

But back to “scalable” pieces. Let’s talk oversized. Relaxed. Comfortable. Laid-back. Or even, functional.

“Question: I’m not 5’ 9” with the body of a runway model. How do I not look frumpy (or borderline “fashion victim”) in oversized outfits? ”

HerStyleCode shared “7 Tips on How to Rock Oversized Outfits”, their general rule of thumb being—to stay within two to three sizes of our standard size (as opposed to going waaaaay to big). You’ll definitely want to steer clear of any potential unflattering “all-over bagginess”. There’s a difference between oversized and going OTT BIG. Or looking like you’ve just borrowed something from someone else’s closet. Hope that makes sense.

If you’re planning to experiment with the oversized chic look, FashionBeans reckons that a jumper is probably the easiest item of oversized clothing to start with. Yet, choosing a material that holds some form of structure will make all the difference.

Colour-wise, I’d start with something that you could never go wrong with—black. It’s one of the safest and most versatile shades. Plus, it’s known to be a quote un quote “slimming” colour. Win.

Here’s one from my recent order. It’s washing-machine safe, so that’s a big plus in my books! :-D

In getting creative with different outfit ensembles, a great tip from Merrick’s Art is to balance oversized with fitted. Eg:

  • Oversized sweaters, t-shirts, and sweatshirts: wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, biker shorts, or other fitted bottoms to offset the volume.

  • Oversized cardigans, jackets, and blazers: wear them with a fitted dress, fitted pants or jeans, or a fitted top underneath.

  • Wide leg or oversized pants: try them with a bodysuit or another fitted top

Another “scalable” piece I love—Joggers. So versatile you can turn an off-duty look into the ultimate street style. Some of the most prominent celebrity stylists say that joggers are the new jeans. I agree wholeheartedly, though I still love my faithful pair of skinny high-rise jeans (makes my stumpy legs look longer than they actually are lol).

For once, comfort, style and functionality can exist on the same page. And with most joggers, there are pockets! Haha. Purposeful pockets are great. Or is it just me? Lol.

With joggers, all you need to do is switch up the footwear and top pairing, and you’ll have an arsenal of inter-changeable looks for different occasions—bringing you from sporty to casual, or even a statement ensemble, with ease.

I recently got an ultra-comfy piece from Femmeluxe.co.uk in a colour I was initially quite nervous about ordering. Sage. Nevertheless, it turned out to be one of my favourite pieces from that delivery. Soooooo soft, huggable, and comfy I want to live in it my whole life. That’s an exaggeration lol, yet, this is a piece I never regret getting. And for me, the most important criteria—it’s machine washable. Lol.

My new staple piece at home, and Sage—my new favourite colour this season. :-D

Back to colours.

“Question: Are you more likely to pick an ensemble in WHITE or BLACK?”

I came across an interesting writeup about what our outfit colours say about us. Psychologists pointed out 11 common clothing colours that reveal our personality, and here’s what they said about these 2 basic colours.

If WHITE was your instinctive first choice, then according to this study, the words “freedom”, “reliable”, “neat”, “organised” or “new beginning” may resonate with your current season in life. WHITE is apparently a colour that “attracts reliable people who love freedom and who look at life optimistically”. How true is this? Lol. Comment below.

If BLACK is your all-time favourite, then “ambitious”, “purposeful”, “sensitive”, “emotional” may describe you.

“Black is a color that is taken seriously”
— Karen Haller, fashion and style expert.

Additionally, *“the colour black is perceived by others as an indicator of prestige, power, seriousness, and intelligence. Therefore, in many European universities, the graduation mantle is coloured black.” Makes sense.

Finally, have you considered adding that statement off-shoulder piece to your wardrobe?

“To say that off-the-shoulder tops are just a trend is a big understatement. Their undeniable presence on the runway, red carpet, and streets, has turned this style into a wardrobe must-have.  Whether they’re worn casually with jeans and flats or dressed up with a midi skirt and heels, off-the-shoulder tops are popping up at every occasion. Their versatile nature combined with that stunning neckline makes them a winning style that you simply must try.”

I wore this for the March croaking shoutouts for our Instagram #OnlineFamily, and some have asked for the purchase link, so there it is. If I’m not mistaken the same piece is available in red. And white. Depending on what size you need. You can go ahead and check.

Hope this helps! If you’re looking for more outfit inspo, the super babes at Femmeluxe.co.uk are also on Instagram @femmeluxefinery #Luxegal.

Love you!

Why Successful People Wear The Same Thing Every Day

“You’ll see I wear only grey or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”
— President Barack Obama.

Zuckerberg's "50 Shades of Grey" wardrobe, Steve Jobs’ iconic black turtleneck, Albert Einstein’s grey suit.

If you had to guess what the “uniform” for success looked like, what would it be?

So a monochromatic wardrobe is synonymous with the style of success. But why?

Which of these apply to you?

  • Your closet is full of clothes but you still end up wearing the same pieces of clothing over and over again
  • You want to look good without really having to think about it
  • You wouldn’t mind having an easier and more efficient “getting ready in the morning” routine
  • You have “bigger” things in life to worry about than having to stress about leaving home looking perfectly put together
“Simply put, by stressing over things like what to eat or wear every day, people become less efficient at work.

This is all related to the concept of decision fatigue, a real psychological condition in which a person’s productivity suffers as a result of becoming mentally exhausted from making so many irrelevant decisions.”
— John Haltiwanger

Introducing the capsule wardrobe, a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces (Wikipedia). Basically, it's a smart library of functional clothes that you love.

“A capsule wardrobe represents more time and energy for what really matter.”
— #Unfancy

While having a fuss-free monochromatic wardrobe is apparently a habit successful people have, it doesn't just revolve around white shirts, grey suits or wearing the same thing every day.

In fact, a trendy monochromatic dressing can be timeless if you choose the colours or shades that look good on you. Consider this your signature style.

If you had to pick a base colour for your capsule wardrobe, what would it be?

Paris playsuit

“There’s no cardinal rule that says rompers have to be short little things that barely reach beyond the tops of your thighs. For more temperate spring days, in fact, we think the long romper is where it’s at; but if you go this route, stick to darker or more neutral colors, then set it off with fun accessories.”

Simplicity in the city

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”
— Leonardo Da Vinci

The French say faites simple. Keep it simple. No need to over-accessorise, overthink or overdo. When all you have on is a plain white dress, the temptation to "dress it up" is unavoidable. Like a blank canvas that's waiting to be painted on, outfits like these are great for every woman's wardrobe because they are not only timeless and versatile but they also give us room to personalise and make it truly exclusive to our individual style. Glam it up, dress it down, layer it on for cooler nights - the options are endless.

Nevertheless, while expressing our personality and making a statement with every new accessory piled on, it also helps to remember that sometimes, less is best. Balance the boldness of a solid coloured fitted dress with the innocence of minimalism to let your personality shine. Accessorise with the best curve on your body - your smile.

Have a beautiful day ahead gorgeous girls! Mwah!

Basics in Brussels

“The romper can be a tough sartorial nut to crack; if you wear one with too airy a fabric, it can end up looking like pyjamas. If it doesn’t fit properly, you lose all your shape (the ideal romper isn’t too tight or too loose, but lands somewhere perfectly in the middle). If it’s too skimpy, you look like a teenager that’s just escaped from the mall. They can also be difficult to accessorise, especially if they’re printed.”
