There used to be a great “fashion disconnect” between the two, in the past, but these days (and more apparently on social media), it appears that the typical “rules” for style don’t really apply anymore. But back to “scalable” pieces. Let’s talk oversized. Relaxed. Comfortable. Laid-back. Or even, functional.

HerStyleCode shared “7 Tips on How to Rock Oversized Outfits”, their general rule of thumb being—to stay within two to three sizes of our standard size (as opposed to going waaaaay to big). You’ll definitely want to steer clear of any potential unflattering “all-over bagginess”. There’s a difference between oversized and going OTT BIG. Or looking like you’ve just borrowed something from someone else’s closet. Hope that makes sense.

If you’re planning to experiment with the oversized chic look, FashionBeans reckons that a jumper is probably the easiest item of oversized clothing to start with. Yet, choosing a material that holds some form of structure will make all the difference.

Colour-wise, I’d start with something that you could never go wrong with—black. It’s one of the safest and most versatile shades. Plus, it’s known to be a quote un quote “slimming” colour. Win.

Here’s one from my recent order. It’s washing-machine safe, so that’s a big plus in my books! :-D

In getting creative with different outfit ensembles, a great tip from Merrick’s Art is to balance oversized with fitted. Eg:

Oversized sweaters, t-shirts, and sweatshirts: wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, biker shorts, or other fitted bottoms to offset the volume.
Oversized cardigans, jackets, and blazers: wear them with a fitted dress, fitted pants or jeans, or a fitted top underneath.
Wide leg or oversized pants: try them with a bodysuit or another fitted top

Another “scalable” piece I love—Joggers. So versatile you can turn an off-duty look into the ultimate street style. Some of the most prominent celebrity stylists say that joggers are the new jeans. I agree wholeheartedly, though I still love my faithful pair of skinny high-rise jeans (makes my stumpy legs look longer than they actually are lol).

For once, comfort, style and functionality can exist on the same page. And with most joggers, there are pockets! Haha. Purposeful pockets are great. Or is it just me? Lol.

With joggers, all you need to do is switch up the footwear and top pairing, and you’ll have an arsenal of inter-changeable looks for different occasions—bringing you from sporty to casual, or even a statement ensemble, with ease.

I recently got an ultra-comfy piece from Femmeluxe.co.uk in a colour I was initially quite nervous about ordering. Sage. If WHITE was your instinctive first choice, then according to this study, the words “freedom”, “reliable”, “neat”, “organised” or “new beginning” may resonate with your current season in life. WHITE is apparently a colour that “attracts reliable people who love freedom and who look at life optimistically”. How true is this? Lol. Comment below.

Getting your hair done in Tokyo

Female and visiting Tokyo for the first time? :-)

Apart from doing the whole Tokyo Disneyland/Disney Sea, shopping at Shibuya 109, ordering ramen from a vending machine and the usual touristy things, something you may want to consider putting in your itinerary (assuming you have some extra time and money) is a visit to a Japanese hair salon. In my humble opinion, getting bangs or having your fringe cut by a Japanese stylist is probably be one the best souvenirs you could take home with you. Even if you don’t intend to get your fringe cut, perhaps a change in hair colour or style will give you something worth remembering from your trip to Tokyo. The men may never understand, but it’s ok. *smile*

Back to the bangs. So if you have 2 crowns (hair “pusat”) and an occasional cowlick at the front of your head like me, you’ll probably agree that getting perfect bangs can be quite an impossible feat. Speaking from experience, the attempt of getting a fringe cut by a not-so-experienced stylist can be rather disastrous, especially when the cut is done on wet hair. I remember so vividly, an instance where my fringe was cut when it was wet; during the blow-drying process it just twirled back according to the crown at the front of my head, resulting in a rather embarrassingly uneven fringe. More like an odd slant. And you could tell it wasn’t a stylistic cut done on purpose. *laugh* In the end, the stylist blamed it on my hair and I hid under a cap for 2 weeks after that unforgettable day.

Anyhoo, bad experiences aside, I have had 2 rare instances of good fringe cuts, both of which were done by Japanese hairstylists. So if you’re blessed with “front head issues” like me *laugh* but still haven’t given up on conquering the bangs, Tokyo would be the perfect place for you to do just that.

DID YOU KNOW: In Japan, hairstylists require a licence to cut hair and typically undergo 2 years of hair school with training and examinations before they are issued that licence.

WHERE TO GET YOUR HAIR DONE IN TOKYO?

Since I last moved to Tokyo in 2009, I’ve had the opportunity to try out various salons in Meguro, Shibuya, Harajuku, Omotesando, Aoyama, Ginza and Shinjuku. You’re spoiled for choice in this fully equipped and highly efficient city, and so far, I’ve learnt that as with the food, you can’t really go wrong with salons in Tokyo.

I’m not sure about you but the things I look for in a salon, apart from having a pleasant environment and being in a convenient location include:

The use of good quality products – I’ve been to salons that ask (as I’m lying in the chair at the washbasin about to get a hair wash) if I wanted to pay the extra for a “good” shampoo. I get that they try and keep your basic salon service cost at a no-frills low, but it just makes me question the general quality of the products they use across the board.
Up to date with the latest hair-care technology – this will also mean that they have the corresponding equipment to support the latest trends (eg. For digital perms, scalp analysis, scalp detox, collagen infused hair colours, organic colouring, etc)
Doesn’t try to sell you more than you need in terms of service, and relentlessly try to push you after-care products (which can be rather intimidating)
Well-versed with all things hair-related and gives you a fully customised service (based on your hair/scalp type or face shape for cuts, etc) since there is no such thing as a one-service-fits-all when it comes to our tresses. It is also important that they treat your hair and head with respect.

There’s no better thing for a girl than to find a salon we’re comfortable with, so if you haven’t found “the one” yet, don’t worry. These things do take time, so keep searching, don’t give up and don’t settle.

A few years back, my friend Cheesie introduced me to a Japanese chain of salons in Kuala Lumpur called Number76, and I become so comfortable with them that I haven’t switch since.

This trip back to Tokyo, I decided to pay a visit to their Omotesando branch and the very first stylist from which I got my maiden haircut at Number76 in Kuala Lumpur years ago – Deji-san. Thanks to my Malaysian style guru, Amy (from the Bangsar 2 branch), I managed to get an appointment with the highly skilled master stylist Deji-san.

Unfortunately, no bangs for me this time round since the husband wasn’t in favour of that idea (now that I’m married, he gets a say in almost everything *laugh*). So the plan was:

Some say fashion is fickle, while others like New York writer Christina Grasso, believe that “there's no escaping it unless you take a cue from Adam and Eve and forgo clothing forever.”

In conjunction with this week’s Fashion Festival Bali 2014, here are the answers to some of your fashion-related questions:

Fashion - So what’s all the fuss about?

Like it or not, fashion is a business and for countries like the UK, the fashion industry worth £26 billion to its economy. According to the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Fashion Week generates an estimated $532 million in direct visitor spending annually, which translates to $865 million in total economic impact.

How does Fashion Week and fashion-related events play a role in this significant industry?

While fashion events in a particular destination city help drive sales for the local businesses, they also play a significant role in elevating retailers and brands in the eye of the consumers. “When we started doing runway shows, it raised our company’s profile dramatically,” said designer Nanette Lepore. “After the first few seasons on the runway, sales jumped 20% a year.”

Who attends fashion shows?

The most important people at fashion shows are the Editors of influential magazines/media, the Designers and the buyers/retailers. Fashion shows are generally not open to the public, and fashion week is not a public event.

“At the shows, retailers see the designers’ creative vision. They get ideas on how the collection should hang in the store, how it should be merchandised, what the window displays might be and if it should be featured in a catalog or an ad.” -Fern Mallis, senior vice president of IMG Fashion

Do designers pay for their own fashion show?

In most cases, yes.

How much do models get paid per show?

According to Cosmopolitan.com’s Style Editor Charles Manning, “Anywhere from $0 to $20,000 or more; it just depends on the model and the show. Supermodels like Karlie Kloss and Gisele Bündchen can make thousands of dollars walking in shows for brands like Chanel or Dior, and there are rumors about models making much much more, especially when walking in the show is part of a larger contract with that brand or if they are on exclusive (only walking for one designer that season)."

"Less established models, on the other hand, often make next to nothing. Usually these models are working on smaller shows, for designers who do not have the budgets to pay them in cash and must instead pay them in trade.”

Who decides on a trend?

“Designers make the clothes – sometimes with the help of professional trend forecasters, sometimes not. Then editors identify the trends based on how many designers are doing whatever it is (pajama shirts, oversized pink cots, leather pants, etc.). The general rule is that you need a minimum of 3 designers to establish a trend, but bigger designers like Dior or Prada can often launch trends all on their own because they are so influential that anything they do will be instantly knocked off and copied by other designers, thereby becoming a trend.”

“That said, a trend is only successful if it sells and new trends often grow out of the successes and failures of old trends, so, in a way, it is the consumers themselves who decide what the trends will be just by shopping.” [Charles Manning]

How to shape your eyebrows

The inner edge of the brow should line up with the outside of the corresponding nostril (A).
The highest point of the arch should be just at the outer edge of the eyeball. (B)
The outer brow should taper off to a point that intersects with an imaginary line drawn from the outer nostril past the outer edge of the eye (C). It sounds complicated, but just follow the drawing and you'll be okay ;-)

Tutorial: 5-minute natural makeup

As per your request ladies! So sorry but I'm no pro when it comes to video editing, so I hope this is okay. This was all shot on my iPhone with one hand holding the phone and the other, painting my face. Lol

You probably figured it out already, but for beginners, the key to this "barely-there" makeup style is to avoid soaking your entire face in foundation. Use your pressed/loose powder sparingly and go easy on the eye-colour. If you have any feedback, please feel free to share.
